Language fields

Language fields record the language associated with a record. For example, the language a person speaks on a Person record, the language of an event for an Event record, or the language of a place name in the Place file.

How these fields work

Language fields are available in several files. You'll see different field labels for Language fields, but they always connect to the Language file. All the terms you create in the Language file will be available across all the Language fields.

For example, the Document file contains two fields that connect to the Language file: Original Language, which records the language in which a document was originally written or produced, and Published Language, which records the language a document is published in.

Examples

  • An event recorded in the Event file may be in a particular language. For example, the event might be Cinco de Mayo and the language would be Spanish.

  • In the Object file, you can describe languages associated with an object, such as English, Ancient Greek, or Māori.

  • In the Place file, you might create a record for Kraków and note that the language is Polish. You could also create Place records for Cracow and Krakow, and note that the language is English.

  • In the Person file, you can enter a language on its own or align it with ethnicity and community.

  • In the Topic file, depending on how you plan to use the content, you can create a single record that handles content in multiple languages or you can create a separate record for each linguistic variation.
