Datafile security

You can control the datafiles that groups (or specific users) can access with datafile security.

Control access to a file's records and fields

You decide which groups (or specific users) can access fields or records in a certain datafile, such as the Object file.

You can set access for whether a user can:

  • Create records

  • View records

  • Edit records

  • Delete records

  • View field information

  • Edit field information

Secured datafiles

By default, only the Object and Person files have any security.

When a datafile has security enabled, you must specifically allow groups or users to view, create, edit, or delete records. Otherwise the datafile cannot be accessed.

You can think of secured datafiles as rooms with locked doors. Unless you give someone a key, they can't get in.

Unsecured datafiles

If a datafile doesn't have any security, then all users can create, view, edit or delete records in that file.

You can think of unsecured datafiles as rooms with doors that have no locks. Anyone can enter the room.

To control access to an unsecured file, see Secure another datafile.

Set default security for all datafiles

To set a default security for all datafiles (unless they have their own security), see Set default security for all datafiles

Turn security on and off

You can turn datafile security on and off with the Data Security Active checkbox.
