Manage your indexing session

You can set up a Vernon CMS session on a desktop to run background indexing tasks. This means you don't have to update the indexes manually.

Set up the indexing session

  1. Set up Vernon CMS on a desktop.

  2. After a shortcut has been created, right-click on the shortcut and choose Properties.

  3. In the Shortcut tab, change the /UN parameter to /UN=INDEXING. For example, if Vernon CMS is stored on the F drive, the target will be:

    F:\WINCOLL\OINSIGHT.EXE /AP=COLLECT /UN=INDEXING

When Vernon CMS is started from this shortcut, three icons will appear in the Task Bar:

  • OpenEngine icon

  • Vernon CMS icon

  • Indexing session icon

The indexing session will automatically start running.

Set the indexing session duration

You can specify how long the indexing session will operate. If unspecified, the Index Server will run continuously, or outside the specified shut down period.

  1. Go to the Tools menu > System Maintenance > Customised Configuration.

  2. Go to the System tab.

  3. In the Index Server Duration field, enter a time in the format hh:mm. The indexing session will close itself down after it has been running for the specified time.

Note: If you use Windows Task Scheduler for the indexing session, make sure you've set a maximum duration in the Index Server Duration field, so that Vernon CMS shuts down the indexing session safely.

Pause the indexing session

To pause the indexing session, click the Pause button.

Shut down the indexing session

It's best to shut down the indexing session before you run the daily backup. See Back up Vernon CMS.

To shut down the indexing session, click the Close button.

You can also shut down an indexing session remotely by logging into Vernon CMS and going to the Tools menu > System Maintenance > Shutdown Index Server. Indexing sessions cannot run while this option in the menu is ticked.

Set the shutdown interval

The indexing session will run indefinitely if no shutdown interval is specified. An indexing session will not be able to be logged in during a shutdown interval. If the indexing session is already logged in at the start of an interval, it will be logged out. Outside the shutdown period, the system will allow sessions to process indexing transactions.

  1. Go to the Tools menu > System Maintenance > Customised Configuration.

  2. Go to the System tab.

  3. Edit the Shut down Index Server between fields.
