Back up Vernon CMS
You should back up Vernon CMS daily so that if a hardware failure or natural disaster occurs you can restore your system.
Overview
You should keep the daily backups as an archive. Backing up, storing, and testing your system should be part of your institution's disaster preparedness plan.
To back up Vernon CMS, copy the Wincoll folder to external hard drives or web-based cloud file storage.
Storing your backup
It is good practice to store your backup copies off-site in case on-site backups and computers are destroyed or made inaccessible in an event such as a fire.
You should keep a backup of every month you have had Vernon CMS.
Backup schedule
The following table illustrates how a standard backup schedule could be arranged.
Storage Media Label | Day Used | Storage Location |
---|---|---|
Daily backups | ||
Monday | Monday | On-site |
Tuesday | Tuesday | |
Wednesday | Wednesday | |
Thursday | Thursday | |
Weekly backups | ||
Week 1 | Friday | Off-site |
Week 2 | Friday | |
Week 3 | Friday | |
Week 4* | Friday | |
Monthly backups | ||
Monthly | Friday | Off-site |
* Week 4 is only needed if there are five Fridays in a given month.
Daily backups
The storage media used for Monday to Thursday daily backups are re-used each week.
Weekly backups
Week 1 to Week 4 are re-used each month and stored off-site.
Monthly backups
On the last Friday of each month, backup is saved to a different storage device that is also kept off-site.
If the cost of storage media is a consideration, we would suggest retaining monthly backups for three months, at which point they could be overwritten. For example, your monthly copy from January could be overwritten with a new monthly copy in March.
