Standards supported
Learn about the various standards that are supported by Vernon CMS.
Overview
Vernon CMS complies with, exports, and imports to a range of standards. Vernon Systems is an official partner with Spectrum and the fields in Vernon CMS can be used to fulfil their requirements and the RDA requirements too. You can also customise and use Vernon CMS fields to support the AASLH and CIDOC standards.
To export your data into a standard, see Export data in XML format.
Dublin Core
Dublin Core is a standard for describing any kind of resource. Resources cover all typical cultural heritage collection objects. It ensures that information is consistent across records and search engines can better understand it.
Darwin Core
Darwin Core is an extension for the Dublin Core standard. Darwin Core describes how terms (field names) can be managed, expanded and used for biodiversity records. This standard provides definitions and commentaries to outline the use of each field across different scientific disciplines and organisations.
ISAD(G)
ISAD(G) stands for International Standard Archival Description (General) and is an archival standard supported by UNESCO and the International Council on Archives (ICA). It is a standard for archives produced by corporations, persons, and families. ISAD(G) aims to create consistent and appropriate descriptions for archive material. It is very similar to EAD. ISAD(G) is the foundation for the descriptions in EAD.
Vernon CMS does not export your data into the ISAD(G) format. However, you can export to the EAD format which uses the ISAD(G) standard.
EAD
EAD (Encoded Archival Description) is an international standard maintained by the Library of Congress and the Society of American Archivists. This standard creates finding aids that standardise descriptions and the organisation of archive material.
EAD is closely modelled on ISAD(G) and is also compatible with MARC.
KML
KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is an XML notation for expressing geographic annotation and visualization within two-dimensional maps and three-dimensional Earth browsers. KML was developed for use with Google Earth, which was originally named Keyhole Earth Viewer.
LIDO
LIDO (Lightweight Information Describing Objects) is an XML harvesting schema. The LIDO schema is intended for delivering metadata, for use in a variety of online services, from an organization’s online collections database to portals of aggregated resources, as well as exposing, sharing, and connecting data on the web.
RDA
RDA (Resource Description and Access) is a standard for both technical and content descriptions of digital and non-digital media. It is the replacement for the AACR2 standard with more support for digital objects than the AACR2 provided.
RDA is largely used by libraries but also supports archives and museums as well.
Spectrum
Spectrum is an internationally recognised collections management standard developed by the UK Collections Trust. It provides advice for museums on how to manage their collections. Vernon CMS is validated by the UK Collections Trust as Spectrum compliant.
